USTA School Tennis In-Service Program

USTA School TennisRepresentatives from the USTA North Carolina teach PE teachers fun tennis games and activities to use with people of all ages. The teachers are taught how to safely introduce the lifetime sport to their students without tennis courts or a large amount of equipment. It is a very active program in which the teachers participate in all of the games and drills.

THE USTA/NCTA WILL PROVIDE:

  • A free 2.5-3 hour training session for PE teachers, held in a gym rather than a tennis court, conducted by a USTA North Carolina representative. The representative brings all of the equipment, and teachers must participate during this session.
  • All participating schools receive a copy of the 9th edition Physical Educators Guide for Teaching Tennis in Schools, developed through a successful collaboration with Dr. Robert Pangrazi, Professor Emeritus, Arizona State University and Deborah Pangrazi, Physical Education Coordinator, Mesa Public Schools.
  • Participating schools are eligible to purchase additional tennis equipment at a discounted price from Gamma, Head, Penn, and Prince.
  • School districts that agree to implement tennis outside the physical education curriculum, such as an after-school program, are eligible to receive a free equipment package along with free training, technical support and access to USTA School Support Funding and the USTA Curriculum Kit.

In return for the above contributions, your school system and/or individual schools must agree to:

  • Teach six PE tennis units.
  • Assist in the distribution of information pertaining to extracurricular community tennis opportunities for students wishing to further develop their tennis skills.
  • We urge schools to become USTA Organizational Members ($25). Members receive a monthly USTA magazine and are eligible to apply for start-up, equipment, and after-school grants through the USTA North Carolina.
  • Sign up by calling USTA Membership at 1-800-990-8782 Monday-Saturday, 8AM – 12AM ET or Sunday 8AM – 10PM ET, or applying online at: http://www.usta.com/membership

ASSEMBLIES

Representatives of the United States Tennis Association, along with local area tennis professionals conduct these motivational assemblies. This 45 minute assembly is free of charge and show kids how easy it is to play tennis, it includes prizes, student and teacher volunteers, and exciting tennis exhibitions; we bring all of the equipment.

Here are a Few Details:

  • Assemblies are used to promote an after-school program by using flyers, and leaving contact information with the P.E. teacher about other tennis programs.
  • Assemblies can be held just about anywhere, but a gym is preferable
  • The program is geared towards grades K-6.
  • We do not require the entire student body to attend. However, we recommend a minimum of 100 kids per assembly.

AFTER SCHOOL OPPORTUNITIES & GRANTS

USTA School TennisUSTA School Tennis partners naturally with after school tennis programs. Many students catch the ‘tennis bug’ and wish to further their skill and knowledge of the game, and offering after school tennis opportunities to children not only gives them a healthy and safe extracurricular activity, but helps battle the obesity fight we face in America’s youth today. USTA North Carolina works with locals Community Tennis Associations (CTA’s) to help start-up and support after school programs, and also offers an After School Start-Up Grant to assist with getting new programs like these moving forward!

USTA Team Tennis Start-Up Grant - Available to CTAs, Parks and Recreation departments, and After-School Programs that would like to start a USTA Team Tennis program. Up to $1000.

  • Contact Marusa Pogacnik at (336) 852-8577 or marusa@nctennis.com for more information on Grants.
