Tennis truly thrives in North Carolina because of its many dedicated players and supporters. Without the loyalty of players, officials, volunteers, friends and family, tennis would not be in the great shape it is here in North Carolina. John Walton of Burlington is the director of tennis with the Burlington Parks and Recreation Department. Deeply involved with the Alamance Junior Tennis Foundation, Walton has become a staple in the community when it comes to teaching tennis to area youth. He holds numerous clinics and lessons throughout the year at his center, which continually hosts some of the best tennis in the state. His contributions to not only those in his own tennis center, but those involved in his community, make him an invaluable component of tennis in North Carolina.

Melissa Feuerstein has played a vital part in the growth of tennis in the Central Carolina League. As well as coordinating all of the USTA Leagues in her area, she is an integral part of the Western Wake Tennis Association where she helped with events and various initiatives that extended well beyond the scope of league tennis. Feuerstein’s development of innovative ways to recruit and place new players into league tennis resulted in a tremendous growth which accounted for 22-percent of all new registration in North Carolina.

Michele Lee started as the USTA Jr. Team Tennis Coordinator in Huntersville during the fall of 2010 and within her first season she generated a tremendous amount of interest in 10 and Under Tennis. In her first year alone, she increased junior membership by 50-percent and nearly tripled the participation numbers.

Frankie Moulton and Maria Tuttle co-captain a USTA 2.5 team in Wilmington, where their charisma and charm became infectious to those new to tennis. Their selfless attitude and passion for the sport flowed throughout their squad as they taught the game of tennis in fun and exciting ways.

Angela Allen of Durham has been instrumental in assisting with Jr. Team Tennis carnivals for 10 and Under Tennis, as well as Jr. Team Tennis leagues. She is always offering a helping hand and frequently donates her time to teach children the basic skills of tennis. She spends much of her free time coaching tennis at various age groups.

North Hills Club has provided great services to the tennis community in Raleigh this past year. They currently host three USTA sanctioned Jr. Tournaments and one USTA Adult tournament.  They offer numerous USTA programs, including Cardio Tennis, adult league play, QuickStart and Jr. Team Tennis. They also run the RBC Bank Women’s Challenge every year and recently celebrated their 50-year anniversary.

Greenville Recreation and Parks has served as a valuable asset to tennis in North Carolina. In the span of one month they hosted two USTA League state championships for the Adult and Super Senior Championships, as well as the Jr. Team Tennis Championships. Whether it was offering the tennis courts or assisting with the execution of tournaments, their commitment and dedication resulted in outstanding results time and time again.
