WHAT: The stage is set for nearly 1,200 state champion hopefuls to compete in the 2011 North Carolina Southern Combo Doubles State Championships this weekend in Wilmington, N.C. The two-week tournament, which features more than 2,000 tennis players from North Carolina, begins with the 5.0, 6.5 and 8.5 levels in week one (Nov. 3-6). The State Championships will take place at eight different locations in Wilmington, including Althea Gibson, Cape Fear Country Club and UNC-Wilmington. The 13 divisions include men and women at adult, senior and super senior levels. Altogether 115 teams will compete in the tournament that will host 786 matches. Week two of the tournament, also held in Wilmington, will take place Nov. 10-13. This portion of the tournament includes levels 5.5, 7.5 and 9.5 at the adult, senior and super senior levels.
