GREENSBORO, NC (November 16, 2011) – Reigning Winston-Salem Open champion and North Carolina native John Isner will headline the 2nd Annual Charity Tennis Exhibition in Raleigh on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011. All proceeds from the event will benefit Duke Hospital Ovarian Cancer Research. The unique charity event will begin at 5 p.m. at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center at North Carolina State University. Isner’s commitment and passion for this event is not without cause. In the summer of 2010 a friend and fellow Georgia Bulldog, Rhyne Andrews, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Isner’s mother is also a cancer survivor, so the diagnosis of his 21-year-old friend hit home. Rhyne is the daughter of Andy and Carol Andrews. "It is an amazing privilege to stand shoulder to shoulder with my friend and fellow UGA Bulldog, Rhyne Andrews, and the many thousands of women in their courageous battle with ovarian cancer,” said Isner. “My mom and my family know all too well the daily life struggle against this disease. “By dedicating all of our time and talent on Saturday in Raleigh, we can make a stand against cancer by helping the incredibly talented doctors, nurses and clinicians at Duke finally put an end to the toll cancer takes on the families around the globe. I am dedicating my personal and professional life to this cause and need everyone in the Triangle area to come out and support us.” Isner, currently ranked No. 23 on the ATP Tour, has won four ATP singles titles and most recently was a quarterfinalist at the 2011 US Open. His most famous and inspiring victory came at Wimbledon when the 6’9” Isner defeated Nicolas Mahut in “the longest tennis match ever played.” After more than 11 hours, Isner prevailed in the deciding tie-breaker 70-68. Isner is widely recognized as having one of the hardest serves on tour. According to John McEnroe, “Isner has the best serve in tennis today.” Joining Isner at the charity tennis exhibition is Blake Strode from Cary, N.C. Strode is currently ranked No. 400 in the world. The 2009 NCAA All-American player from The University of Arkansas recently captured the 2010 Inaugural US Open National Playoff Championship. Strode has many athletic and academic achievements and has deferred his acceptance into Harvard Law School to give the pro tennis circuit a try. His presence at the exhibition in Raleigh will be a highlight. The exhibition will include women’s singles, mixed doubles and men’s singles. Former N.C. State tennis all-American and tour pro Andy Andrews, who still stays very involved in tennis, put together the event to raise awareness and money to help fight the disease. Tickets for the event are $70 per person ($20 is tax deductible) for general admission seating and $100 per person for VIP seating ($25 is tax deductible) and can be purchased at www.ovarianawareness.org.
