GREENSBORO, NC (Nov. 5, 2012) – Week one of the North Carolina Southern Combo Doubles State Championships in Wilmington concluded last weekend as more than 100 teams competed for one of 10 Sectional berths. Capital, Lake Norman and South East Tennis led the way with two titles each. Wilmington's 7.5 Senior Women's team and 7.5 Super Senior Women's team capitalized on their home court advantage to seize their respective titles. Captain Cheryl Matsche's Senior 7.5 squad captured their title by going 5-0 in group play before knocking off undefeated Central 2-1 in the championship match. Wilmington's 7.5 Super Senior team, captained by Vicky Hanes, also went 5-0 in the tournament to set up an exciting championship match that pitted them against 5-0 Western North Carolina. The two teams combined to win 25 sets to just five losses in group play, but in the end it was Hanes' squad that took the title with a 2-1 victory. Captial's 5.5 Adult Men's and 9.5 Adult Women's teams both brought home titles after going 3-1 in divisional play. Mark Robson, captain of Lake Norman's 7.5 Senior Men's team, helped guide his team to a 3-0 upset over an undefeated Capital team that lost just one court in group play. Skip Hepburn's 7.5 Super Senior Men's team out of Lake Norman also emerged with a Sectional berth after winning 13 of 15 courts over the weekend. Week one of the tournament included 5.5, 7.5 and 9.5 levels at the adult, senior and super senior divisions. Week two, which begins this Thursday, Nov. 8, features the 5.0, 6.5, and 8.5 levels. Winners at the adult level advance to Southern Sectionals in Mobile, Ala. March 1-3, 2013, while the senior/super senior winners will play in Dothan, Ala. March 8-10, 2013.
