Release courtesy of Country Club of Landfall

On February 26, 2013, the Landfall Legends of Tennis Committee will present $15,000 to the Miracle League of Wilmington as part of an ongoing partnership through the Landfall Legends of Tennis exhibition and fundraiser, held at the Country Club of Landfall this past fall.  The ceremony will take place at Olsen Park where the Miracle League is currently constructing a $1.2 million dollar facility for children with disabilities, wounded warriors and others of all abilities to enjoy recreational activities.

Landfall Legends of Tennis began in 1992 and is in its second year back from taking a hiatus in 2002.  Over the last two years, more than $50,000 has been raised for local non-profits with this year’s beneficiaries the Miracle League and the UNCW men’s and women’s tennis programs through the UNCW Seahawk Club. “Since its inception, Landfall Legends of Tennis has been about celebrating great tennis with a focus on helping the community,” said Country Club of Landfall’s Director of Tennis, Charlie Owens.  “We have been fortunate to have many notable former professional tennis players headline and participate in our event, all of whom understand the importance of using the sport to give back.”

2012 was the first year Landfall Legends partnered with the Miracle League, whose mission is to provide opportunities for children with disabilities to play Miracle League baseball, regardless of their abilities.  The field, scheduled to open May 18, 2013, will allow these children a place to engage in team sports and will also provide recreational programs for Wounded Warriors and seniors. “This tournament and all involved have become a part of the Wilmington Believes in Miracles Campaign,” stated Miracle League Director, Bo Dean. “Through this most generous partnership, the reality of health, wellness, and sports for those who have so long not had access to it, is becoming a reality.”  The $15,000 from Landfall Legends will go towards assisting in the construction of the field.

The 2012 Legends event saw more than 1,500 fans in attendance with former touring professionals, local tennis professionals, the UNCW women’s tennis team and CCL’s nationally recognized ACE junior tennis academy players taking the court.  Former world number one players and grand slam champions Tracy Austin and Stan Smith headlined the last two years of Legends respectively.

The Landfall Legends of Tennis Committee will present the check to Chairman of the Miracle League, Dr. Dan Johnson, alongside members of Access Wilmington.  The ceremony will take place at 2:30 pm at the Miracle League field located at 5510 Olsen Park Lane.

Landfall Legends will take place this year over the weekend of September 13-15 at the Country Club of Landfall’s Sports Center complex and will again benefit the Miracle League and UNCW tennis programs.  Landfall Legends is sponsored by BB&T and presented by Williams Mullen.
