Judy Utley was inducted into the North Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame in 2011 for her extensive background as a player, administrator and volunteer. Now she's preparing to enter another prestigious group of tennis greats, as Utley has been selected for induction to the Southern Tennis Hall of Fame.
Utley will officially be inducted at the Hall of Fame Banquet at the USTA Southern Annual Meeting on Jan. 18, 2014. This is just one of multiple accomplishments the Greensboro native has achieved throughout her tennis endeavors.
In the 1980s, Utley began her work off the court with leagues, serving as a member and later becoming president of the Greensboro Tennis Association Board. Utley was the North Carolina Tennis Association (NCTA) President from 2000-2001. Her work continued with several NCTA and North Carolina Tennis Foundation committees.
Utley's work extends past the borders of North Carolina. Serving as USTA Southern Secretary in 2001-02 followed by a term of vice president, Utley became the section’s executive vice president in 2005 and then was elected president for the 2007-2008 term. Under her leadership, the section experienced tremendous growth in every aspect, including USTA League play, Jr. Team Tennis and overall membership. She initiated projects, such as the revision of the USTA Southern Bylaws, that impacted the section for years to come.
But she's gone beyond the reach of the Southern section as well. On the National level, she continued with her passion for leadership in adult league play. Utley served as a member of the USTA League Committee and chair of USTA League Regulations Subcommittee. She also served as a member of the Learning and Leadership Development Committee for six years. From 2009-2010, she was the USTA Section Delegate for Southern and a member of the USTA Executive Committee. Other National positions included two terms as a Council Chair and a member of the Advisory Group on Committees. She currently serves as Council Chair Coordinator and a member of the Advisory Group on Committees. In 2009, she received the prestigious USTA Barbara Williams Leadership Award.
Utley has been an avid league and recreational player for many years. She shows her passion for tennis on and off the court, dedicating decades of service to the sport. Come 2014, Utley will join the other members of the 2014 induction class to add another milestone to her career.
