NC State Captures 2017 Border Battle Title

On Sunday April 2, longtime Tobacco Road rivals, the University of North Carolina (Pictured on the left) and NC State (Pictured on the right), met in the finals of the annual Tennis on Campus Border Battle. The NC State Wolfpack knocked off the three time defending champion Tar Heels, 27-20, to capture their first Border Battle title since the inaugural tournament in 2012. NC State finished the weekend 4-0, defeating West Virginia University, University of Maryland, and James Madison University before meeting UNC in the finals.

“NC State and UNC will represent USTA North Carolina at the Tennis on Campus National Championship next weekend. We were excited to see them battling it out in preparation for the ultimate title,” said Caroline Downs, USTA North Carolina Director of Team Tennis and Growth Leagues. “It’s always exciting to see two North Carolina teams perform so well, especially when ACC bragging rights are on the line!”

The Border Battle, which started as a small six team tournament in 2012, is now one of the premier opportunities for club tennis teams to compete. Open to any team in the nation, this tournament continues to grow each year. 26 teams representing seven different states and the District of Columbia participated in the 2017 Border Battle hosted by USTA Southern and USTA Mid-Atlantic. While the goal of the Border Battle is to create a fun environment for teams and players, there is certainly a competitive air surrounding this event as the schools battle each other for bragging rights.

This year’s Border Battle was held at the Virginia Beach Tennis & Country Club in Virginia Beach, VA on Saturday April 1 and Sunday April 2.
